Early Distance

, Back

The beginning rarely looks anything like the thing that made it seem worth starting. The picture in your head stays strangely intact while the work arrives in fragments, each one revealing a different kind of distance.

Early work has an honesty that disappears later. It shows not only what you can do, but what you're trying to do. The gap is visible from both directions at once.

Eventually the distance doesn't become smaller so much as more familiar. It remains, but it stops feeling like something standing in the way and starts to feel like part of the work itself.
